Family favorite is what they are called here!

Black and White cookies? Half moon?;

Black and White cookie or Half moon; no matter what you call them in your part of the country, in our home they are called a family favorite. I have been making these incredibly soft, cakey cookies for over 20 years. In fact this recipe was passed down from my dad.

Generally I like to try all of the “professional bakery” style cookies, pasties and cakes out there, because I find it a challenge to see if I can duplicate a recipe, flavor or texture in a home baked treat.

Many of my recipes have been developed from just going out and trying different products.

Some absolutely live up to the expectations and some sadly do not live up to the hype or reputation that they have built.

This was the case recently, while I haven’t tried many half moon cookies made commercially, I recently bought what was touted as the best and reportedly the original maker of the cookie.

Disappointed in the commercial cookie?

Unfortunately I was disappointed. The commercial cookie had a very dry texture with a flavorless greasy shortening based icing. Definitely not the treat you might expect when described as “the best”.

So today I thought…. I’m going to share my half moon recipe!

I’d love to know what you all think. Give this recipe a try and see if you don’t feel like I do… and maybe you’ve only had the commercial half moon cookie and haven’t been a fan.

Give this recipe a try and I think it just might change your mind. The result is a soft, slightly cakey, deep chocolate( which can be altered to be vanilla by omitting the cocoa) cookie topped with chocolate and vanilla buttercream that has the right balance of sweet and butter. ,

Soon you will be “dressing” up your half moon cookies for holidays!

Such as my fall “harvest” half moons pictured here!
